Confused guy building a PC

After reading all of the "101" topics, here, I am still very confused on what is necessary to build a valuable PC. I'm not saying that they are terribly written, but all the terms like "SATA" and "FSB" still confuse me. I still have absolutely no clue as to what features a good Motherboard includes.:(

I'm looking to build a computer for school (word processing), music (lots of MP3's), and some good gaming. I would like to be able to run a game like Oblivion with great if not maximum graphical output. I don't think I need a fancy network card since I'm won't be playing games like World of Warcraft, but I will be using the internet often.

Right now, I know that this is what I need:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2 GB of RAM
256 MB ATI Graphics card (PCI express?)
Windows XP (do I upgrade to Vista in January?)
LCD Moniter w/ DVI (at least 1280 x 1024 Resolution?)
60 GB or more Hard Drive
10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN?
At least 4 USB 2.0 Ports?
Audigy Sound Card?

I have about $1000 for the CPU itself. I already have a Monitor and other equipment.

I know there are many other threads like this one, but I wasn't sure if I should just copy their builds because they may not be using equipment that I need, or be paying for equipment that won't be of any advantage to me.
Thankyou to any who help.:)

For you, I would definately say that the sound and ethernet that some on all motherboards these days would be sufficient. As for the processor, go with the C2D E 6400 or 6600. For the graphics, either a RAdeon x1950 or nVidia 7950. Don't buy vista, stick with XP. Most motherboards these days come with 4 or more USB ports.

Thanks for the direction stranger.:)

I still don't fully understand the information about Hard Disk Drives, nor do I know what type of PSU I would need. I need help with that.

Do I need to purchase a separate Sound Card?

What else am I missing that is very important? Is this a good, balanced PC for what I will be paying?

Thanks; using that Nvidia card would save me some money. I added it to the list to gets others opinions. I had the impression that ATI was better.

Also, isn't "Crossfire" and "SLI" a way of stringing 2 video cards together as 1? Is that type of connection necessary now to play todays high end games? If so, will my parts be much more expensive to convert?

Go with at least the Gigabyte 965P-S3, DS3, or Asus P5B if neither of the previous two are in stock. The 945P chipset is a real limitation for a system like that.

You don't need SLI or crossfire, and in fact you'd be better off to get a better single card, such as an 8800GTS, if you wanted to spend more money to improve the system further. Upgrading to 2GB of RAM wouldn't hurt either, even if you need to downgrade the CPU to an E6400/E6300.

As for a PSU, i'd go with the XClio Goodpower 500W, or better, the Enhance 5150GH.
