Confusing problem with Inspiron 9100

Hello, I recently bought an inspiron 9100 of ebay. It came with basic windows XP installed with a Dell OS disk.

Problem:
When I enable the computer with the video card installed, the screen turns off after the windows loading splash logo, right before the blue welcome screen would appear. If I plug in an external monitor, it works fine, and I have no problems with the video card. I tried 3 drivers that come with windows, Omega drivers, and the updated dell drivers. They all react the same.

The first thing I did was when I got the comp was head to windows update, and fully update the OS. When I recieved the computer the drivers for the video card were not installed, and I updated windows before I installed them. Not sure if that's meaningless information.

It's an Inspiron 9100, Windows XP OS, 3.0ghz, 512 ram, and a Radeon Mobility 9700 (128mb).

Any help is greatly appreciated, I've been trying to figure it out for a couple days now.

I was told there might be some compatability issue with widescreen lcd's and certain graphics cards. As far as I'm aware, both are from dell, but the system has been formatted and OS reinstalled. Could this potentially mess with the display drivers for the LCD?
I downloaded Sandra Lite, from SiSoftware to try to identify what type of lcd I have, but the program doesn't seem to recognize it, I get no information.
I won't have access to an external monitor for a couple days, but am wondering if I have to have proper drivers installed in the video card to get info on the monitor.
Would it even be possible that the driver for the lcd was causing the problem? I'm open to just about anything at this point, and am thoroughly stuck. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Also, when I have the omega driver installed, under device manager it lists 4 default monitors, generic television, and plug and play monitor, all of which are enabled. Could this be causing some sort of conflict?
