Im wanting to connect 2 computers together using an ethernet cable so I can get the internet on the 2nd computer. Could someone please give me a step by step guide. Thank you

The one computer that has internet, how does it connect? Is it wireless or through an ethernet cable? If its through an ethernet cable then you would need a second lan port on the one machine so you can connect a cable from it to the second computer. Using a router would be much simpler and you would not have to have the one computer on all the time to give the other one internet access.

Use Crossover cable then

(Assuming that PC1 has 2 LAN ports.) Here is an example:

PC 1 (the one with the internet)
IP address = 192.168.1.1
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0

PC 2
IP address = 192.168.1.2
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway = 192.168.1.1
DNS Server = 192.168.1.1

You can't.

You cannot connect two PCs via normal cat5 ethernet directly - you need to use a switch or a router (eg modem/router) - or you need to use specially pinned 'cross-over' cable for direct connection.

Ethernet doesn't mean "Straight-Through", so yes, you can. Listen to johnb35. Cheers.
