Connect Desktop to Laptop

Hi ,
I have DELL laptop u use pendrive to transfer data to my Desktop PC.
I want to know how can i connect my both computers via data cable.

I heard that people use
RUN -> ping 12.345.678.900.... some network number of PC.

I dont have much idea about it.

Can anyone send me the code of the ping to conn to my laptop and vice-versa.

its not called code.
First you need to put both machines on STATIC IP (you know how to do this right?),in a range like 192.168.0.3 etc.
then you ping, make PC ping laptop and make laptop ping PC,if there are replies then your setup is good to go.Share the folders and
go to start->run-->\\Ip of Machine or simply browse the network for shared folders
