Connected to the Network, But no internet connection

I have been in the situation quite a few times where it said "local access only" or "no internet connection" but on almost all the times resetting the router worked. This time the situation is more complicated than it seems. My laptop is HP dv-1120us, was running good and all of a sudden the internet stopped working. Gave computer a restart, router a restart, reset the internet settings, and every possible thing i thought might help. But the problem still exists. Also tried the troubleshooting and it says "The remote device or the resource wont accept the connection." Does anybody has any idea what might be the case?

Few things:
I believe, there is no problem with our router cuz its only my laptop that cannot connect to the internet, other device can.

Problem is specific to the internet. i can connect on the wireless network and do the sharing.

when I did ipconfig /all for the wireless i think everything looks just fine. I will try and post the entire thing here asap.

i have a dual boot, and the same problem exsits on Ubuntu. However, I have no clue about troubleshooting in Ubutnu at all so..

Thanks for the interest. Hope we can solve this..

I tried the wired connection, and its working. Seems like something with my wireless...
I do not know what else information could be relevant, just let me know if u guys wanna look into anything else..

If you set a static IP change it to automatic and see if you can connect. Also it may be a security setting on the router, disable it temporarily and see if you can connect and get internet.

Nope, haven't set any static IP as far as i know. anyways how do I check it if it did happen somehow. I havent messed with the router settings either and i tried restarting it couple of times, but it didnot work. Also, i am pretty sure there is some setting messed up on my laptop itself, cuz my friends and others computer can easily connect to the network with internet.
Any thing else i could check on?

Thanks

Is this the ip address you get on your wireless connection?

192.168.249.254

Usually the ip addresses start at 192.168.249.101 if your dhcp server's ip address is 192.168.249.1

I just have a feeling you aren't getting a valid ip address.

looking at the ipconfig it looks like 192.168.249.254 is my ip address. I am not sure how it should look like. If it is not a valid IP, do you have any idea on how to get the valid one? Also, did some diagnosis, reinstalled all the network related drivers, still the problem exists. On diagnosis it says "the remote device or resource wont accept the connection."
Of course, I googled it but nothing matches my situation. I am pretty damn sure this is nothing due to the browser settings. My laptop is the ONLY thing that is not getting connected to the internet, my friends laptop does. But my laptop does find wireless networks and gets connected, only problem is the internet.
Does anyone knows that is it possible for a router just to block a computer specificall from connecting to the internet? Darn i have even tried restarting the router, no progress so far.
thanks for the concern guys!

i just figured out something really important in this problem, this could eventually help me get connected to the internet again from my place. I took my laptop to my school, connected to their network, and everything just worked fine there. So, to conclude there is nothing wrong with my laptops wireless settings or connections, there is some problem with the router itself. For some reason it is only blocking my computer from accessing the internet. resetting it would solve my problem probably, but if anyone could explain how this happened I would be really greatful. thank-you!

Some firewalls have a tendency of blocking your connection even if you start a slighty harmless application. The firewall reacts to it as a threat depending on the settings and blocks of your internet connection. For example, my friend had a problem with accessing the internet because his firewall blocked him after he played CS non steam. Seems pretty weird I know, but some firewalls are really sensitive... But in your case I wouldn't think your wall is that complicated set..

re:

Ok try the following and let me know how you get on:

1. open CMD.exe
2. ping the gateway IP address (Should get a response)
3. ping a website like google.com (If you get a reponse, confirm that the hostname has resolved to an IP address).
4. If 3 doesn't work, try the command nslookup (Gateway IP address).
5. If it doesn't resolve then you will more than likely find that it is a DNS issue between your client and your home AP, hence not getting a connection.

Issue the following commands:

1. Ipconfig /release, Ipconfig /flushdns, Ipconfig /renew
2. If that fails to correct the problem, try find 2 seperate DNS addresses (From anywhere on the web, use 202.27.184.3 and 202.27.184.5. These 2 addresses are xtra.co.nz dns entries (NZ ISP).
3. Try to statically assign these addresses as well as statically assign your IP, subnet and gateway address.

You may find that DNS resolution between your AP and the ISP isn't working correctly. You are currently receiving a DNS entry pointing to that of your router gateway's IP address, but that may not be doing the translation on the NAT side of the house.

Let me know how you get on.
