connecting hi fi speakers to a computer

hi
i have some old 40w hi fi speakers that i want to connect to my computer because my current speakers are terrible is this possible and if so do i need an amp?

ya you need an amp.

you could use a mini-din to stereo rca adapter to run the headphone jack of your soundcard to the amp, and then hook up the speakers to that.
