Connecting laptop hard drive to desktop computer

My HP laptop stopped booting past the HP welcome screen. I suspect that the problem lies within the hard drive, so in an attempt to recover my files from the drive, I attached both SATA and power cables from my desktop computer to the laptop hard drive. The problem is that the laptop hard drive does not show up on my desktop computer (not even in BIOS) even though I can feel it spinning. My stupid question is: the laptop hard drive should be recognized by connecting it this way shouldn't it? I'm assuming that it should and is just completely failed.
 
Yes, I can feel it spin. Yesterday it was making clicking sounds while in the laptop, though I haven't heard any sounds when it is just attached to my desktop.
