Connecting my desktop to the internet

Hello folks. I am in need of a way to connect my desktop computer to the internet. I currently use an aircard as my sole connection, on a newish laptop. The desktop is rather old, so I'd rather have the laptop handle the routing, so my connection to both computers won't be slowed down by the lowest-common denominator. Attached, is what I have in mind. Can that work, sharing the connection backwards through the router? Or do I have to do something else instead?

All help is appreciated. Cheers

Not sure if that would work or not, you would have to contact your provider. You may be forced to get another card for the desktop. You don't have dsl or cable internet in your area?

Haha.... heh... [cries]

Nope. But I do have 4G...lol. Seriously. The only options in my area are satellite, T1, 3G/4G and dial up. Bizzare, ain't it? I almost bought a T3 connection and sold off bandwidth to my data-deprived neighbors.

What about router-to-router? Maybe I'm just being stupid.

Install Connectify on your laptop. Connectify will turn your Win 7 laptop into a wireless router that your desktop can connect to via wifi (provided you have a wireless adapter for your desktop). No need for a stand alone router as in your diagram.

Another possibility is to network the 2 computers together via cable and use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which is built-in to Windows.

Hmmm.....

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the desktop doesn't have a wireless card, just the NIC. And a cable would unworkably limit mobility...

I had someone tell me a few minutes ago that there are stand alone routers with USB and PCMCIA ports to allow me to attach my aircard directly to them. This seems workable...
