Connecting to the internet

Getting a handheld soon and, although it is not vital for what I shall use it for, I would like to know how to connect to the internet. Does it just need a normal PC router and setting up the handheld or is it something different altogether. Can someone explain I would go about doing this?

Oscar, OSCAR - my man!

Handheld devices - depending on the model, would either have a GPS system ready or internet ready with your phone carrier. If it's an older model, you may require additional hardware devices.

Why not tell me who's your phone carrier, like: Verizon, Sprint, Cingular/AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. And then what unit you have in order to assist you further?
