Connecting two computers together!!!

I'm trying to connect my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop to my father's HP laptop using a crossover cable. What I'm trying to do is to make a Disc Backup CD from my father's HP laptop and using my Dell laptop's CD burner using a crossover cable. Also both laptop's have Windows XP as there OS. What I need help with is instructions on how to set-up both computers. The Dell laptop well be the Master Computer and the HP laptop well be the Slave Computer.
 
There is no "master/slave" setup when you're doing cross over networking. Just setup one computer's IP address as 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, and the other as 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0. DNS and gateway entries are not required.

It's then a matter of setting up file sharing. You could simply right-click on the hard drive and share it to anyone on one or both computers, or share specific folders as needed.

To connect to one of the laptops, go to start > run > and type in the IP address of the computer.

Thanks for help The_Other_One, but I tried doing what you said and it not working. I'm about ready to buy an external DVD-RW drive, but I would like to try and get these two computer to work. Can you or anybody else give me step-by-step instructions on how to get this computers working and recognizing each other so I use the recover disc program from the HP laptop and use the CD/DVD burner on the Dell laptop. Please don't leave any small detail out. Thanks :D .
 
Why not tell us what you tried to do? and what did or didn't work?

You set the IP address's to static in the network connections properties on each machine? One to 192.168.0.1 and one to 192.168.0.2?

You used a crossover cable, not a standard network cable?
