Connecting with a new computer

Sorry, a newbie here. I bought a mac to work on some graphics but use my pc for everyday use. To connect to the web via my mac, i'm having problems connecting. Can I simply use the same ip addy that i normally use and switch the cable to my mac and back and forth? Or am I missing something here...thanks!

anybody?
Do I have to get a crossover cable or can I just take out my cable from my pc and plug it into the mac? I don't mind using one at a time as I don't need to use the mac online that much and pay $10/month extra to my cable company for another ip.

You should be able to run your MAC off of your PC connection, we ran both off of the same line. Not sure re the ip addy but think so. Cross over cable is more for transfering data between the comps. I take it you are not wireless simples things up so much! but it it is not cheap if you do not really need it.
Good luck

what you have to do in order to switch back is unplug the cable modem (from electic) remove the cable from the pc and plug it into the mac and when you plug the cable modem backinto the electric and it will get an ip from the modem

I'm sorry, but why do I need to unplug the cable from the wall and replug? To gain a new connection and a new dynamic IP? I'm a bit confused. Unplug from wall and then plug back in and switch other end to the mac?

On my Mac setup, under Network, I chose "Built-in Ethernet." Under the TCP/IP menu, I input my IP, subnet mask, and when I click on Network again, it says that there is a connection with the built-in Ethernet and my IP address. It says I'm connected, but when I try to browse with Safari, it says I'm not connected
