Connection Issue

Hey guys, a while back i was having connection issues where everyone would go offline. Here's my setup and problem.....

Modem------Router-------Swtich------Nodes

Recently it started again.....basically it seems as if the whole network just crashes... big crash... i see ALL lights on switch, router and modem stop flashing..... even lights on modem stop flashing as if i lose connection to my isp. It happens even with two computer online at the most. Can this be defective hardware or does it sound more like a collision(although i don't know how a switch can really collide). The switch is a netgear 8 port 100mbit/s. Only way to recover is to unplug and replug the devices. Ive never seem 3 devices just stop like that at once. I already tried unplugging only the modem, then only the router, and switch but for some reason all 3 need to be rebooted when this occurs.

It does seem a little strange that you have both a switch and a router unless one is wired and the other wireless. I use a wireless access point on my wired network. The wired network uses two switches with the nodes (including the access point) attached to them.

If you lose connectivity with your ISP, you need to leave the network alone until connectivity is restored. You can use it as a network but you don't want to be reconfiguring the internet service. Leave it alone. Everything will restore itself once the ISP is back online. Reconfiguring internet service it during the outage can cause the total crash you experienced. Been there, done that. I have satellite ISP. It's a terrible service but it is what is available. It goes out almost daily. I ignore the outage and just use dial up during the period that the satellite service is down.

Restoring your network after the crash is simple if the ISP is on-line and really difficult if it isn't. I don't know if all that helped other than give some comfort that others have experienced the same thing.
 
But i really doubt its on my isp side because it happens often. And i don't got enough port on my router that why i connected a switch. It seems to be my own network which jams my modem.

But you know i tried without the switch and it works now. But i need a switch for the other 3 pcs.... I'm wondering if its because the switch can't handle the load or what? Or maybe the router couldn't handle the load with all goign into one port. But i mean it is a 100mbit/s connection on the lan side and i BARLEY was getting close.....

like i said before lets try to figure out what peice of hardware is causing the issue.

disconnect your switch and connect 3 devices to your router and see if everything works.
if everything is fine then disconnect your router and connect one of your pcs diectly to your your modem.

another thing. how old is your modem, your router, and your switch?
 
My router and switch are new... the modem is pretty old but its not the modem because it doesn't do the same thing with a pc connected to it. I have a feeling its the switch. I tested the switch out just locally connect 8 pcs to it and transferred large multiple files and it slowed down AA LOTT. But i still didn't get that crash i got before. The router works fine as well as 4 pcs into it directly full throttle and it was fine... It's so weird. Maybe router just doesn't like all the traffic going through one port i don't know.

Just to add... before i was p2ping constantly to test throughput with the switch. No crashes using high p2p traffic. I remember the crash happening a lot when i used to use msn messenger and high bandwidth a the same time. Its as if msn doesn't want a lot of bandwidth going through while its connecting to its service... I still can't find the main cause. Ill get back to you soon.
 
well the reason why it would slow down is because of the files taht you are transfering. it would happen to any switch. unless you get the enterprise switches....

now did you have the router still connected to the modem while you had 4 pcs connected to it?

and whats p2p? is it peer to peer. just want to make sure we are on the same page.
 
Yes its peer to peer. And yes the modem was connected to the router while 4 pcs using the internet connection through it without a prob. So i guess its down to that switch. But although i tested the switch separately, it did not crash it just really slowed down. So maybe it is the all in one connection which was jamming the network(I had the switch unlink to the router 1 port. Maybe i can try balancing a bit of the load by connecting 3 pcs to the router itself while the other 5 are on the switch instead of 8 and see what that gives.

Ive already seen connection with more than 8 on one port... But like you mentioned maybe that's on bigger and more expensive equipment....
