Connection Issues

Hi guys, wonder if any of you can help me solve this problem please :!: This is not a problem with my computer, but my fiancees step-mother

It is a EiSYSTEM 4406 Laptop, Win XP Home Ed. Service Pack 1, Celeron 2.4GHz, 248mb Ram.

The problem is with the modem. When the modem (dial up) is connected to the phone socket and you check thru the phone whether you have a dial tone, you put the phone down again but then phone line stays open, it doesn'nt close the line so it goes 'dead'. If you do this without the modem plugged in (just the phone) it is fine :?: So what I have to do to connect to the internet is unplug the modem line, check the dial tone on the phone, then connect the modem line and connect :!:

It sometimes takes a couple of attempts to connect, just says remote computer not answering or somthing like that :?: It only connect at between 31.2 - 38.6 if i'm lucky :!: She is using freeserve pay as you go.

According to modem diag. the modem is working fine! Any ideas :?:

Thanks

Rick

that not a bad speed for dial up. You never get the theoretical max of 56kb

I have heard of that problem before... If I remeber right there was something wrong with the modem, and it was shorting out the telephone line, causing it to go temporarily "dead" If you can try a different modem, or computer... Also, maybe try a different phone line, or jack?!?

Think I will be buying her a new modem, she says its my fault  :D I figured it was prob. the modem however wasnt sure if any of you lot would have heard anything else like this b4......I think the modem took a crap when they went on holiday, they left the modem line connected to the phone socket and they always have lighting and power cuts where they live so maybe a small voltage has gone up the line and just frazzled the board slightly causing it to 'kill' the phone line after every use  Anyway, thanks
