Connection Problems with AT&T Uverse - RJ-11 & Dynamic IP

I have AT&T Uverse Internet

I have two quesitons, first is there anything special about the RJ-11 jack that was installed in my house or will any RJ-11 jack work? I took a look inside and found a computer board, which doesn't make any sense to me, since the electronics were supposed to be in the RG. Could this be the cause of communication problems I have been having?

Second, I have had the same IP address for months. I was told that the RG constantly changes for enhanced security initially, then I was informed that each RG has it's own IP address and replacement of the RG is the only way to get a different IP address. Do you all have a Static IP which is referred to as Dynamic? Or do any of you get different IP adresses, ocassionally?

What probs are you having?

the rj-11 jack is special for IPTV, its an 8 pin jack capable of running multiple phone lines, data or both at the same time. the picture is of the homerun feeding your rg with the vdsl signal form your ni on the side of your house. Any regular rj-11 jack can cause your rg to lose sync. What kind of issues r u having? and your ip adress is static regardless of what you do, however At&T now offers you the option of having a Dynamic IP if you want. I think they only offer it to businesses, but i could be wrong. the RG is 128 bit encrypted and there is no need for you to worry about having a different IP adress, 192.168.1.254 is the rg's ip for you to configure its settings, you need the system password to access it, located on the bottom side of the gateway. Any other questions let me know!

Thanks for your reply.

Thinking about what you wrote, regarding the jack allowing for IPTV and computer networking, it makes sense that there would need to be a special jack for both, simultaneously. Thank you for clarifying the purpose of the jack.

As far as static and dynamic, AT&T stated everyone has a dynamic, along with other isps, such as TW Cable, and the many dial up isp's.

When I did research TWC stated that you would have to pay to have a static ip, and I don't remember if AT&T even offered it, but I think they did.

So, we are all generally on dynamic, meaning that the ip address will change from time to time. It was explained to me by an AT&T representative that the RG changes ip ever 60 seconds and thus was rated #1 by JD Power & Assoc. for security purposes.

I can't find any evidence of that being true, at least not at my house.

I did expect the ip to change ocassionally at least and when it didn't change for several months, suspected that the AT&T Rep's info must be wrong, but couldn't figure out why I was told that, if it weren't true.

Who knows?

Oh well, as long as it works.
