Connection problems

Hey guys, I'm having a slight problem with my internet connection on my old desktop pc. It's connected through an ethernet cable running into my router. Windows is telling me it's all connected and functional, but I can't get onto the internet, and for some reason I cant ping my router. Although the wifi side of my router seems to be working fine. So I was wondering wether it has something to do with my network card, or something else. I'm running on windows xp professional btw.
thanks.

Have you been infected recently? Open internet explorer, click on tools menu. click on internet options. Click on the connections tab, click on the lan settins button. Uncheck the boxes under proxy server settings if they are checked.

The boxes were already unchecked, and it still isnt working. Although it did work earlier today, and then it just disconnected and hasn't come back since. I'm guessing it must be a virus then?

Oh never mind, I've fixed it already. Turns out I had a usb wifi reciever interfering with my standard connection, unplugged it, and everything started working again. Could you have another look at my audio driver problem please, I posted another comment.
thanks (:
