Connection-specific DNS Suffix

I have not dablled with domain networking.

Using IPCONFIG in command, you get "Connection-specific DNS Suffix" listed. On some networks this has an entry, and on others it doesnt. I am sure I have seen an entry on this line when the network is not run as a domain.

Could someone give me a quick lesson on this?

I dont know a massive amount about it. from my understanding you are given the connection specific dns when using connected to a domain and it inserts the domain name infront of your machine name to give the FQDN (fully qualified domain name)

You have two different things mixed up.

a CS DNS suffix is the domain (example.com).

A FQDN is the combination of the NETBIOS name and the CS DNS suffix (computer.example.com).

as far as i know, whether you need the suffix or not depends on if you have ipv6.
if you have ipv4 like i do then you dont need it.

but please dont ask me to explain what ipv4and6 are. i have no clue
