connection to net not good for 1 computer but good for another

Hi Everyone,
I have a desktop computer that works fine connecting to the net. I also have a laptop that was also working(net connection) when I switched the internet cable. After I recently returned from being away for 3 days I switched the cable and the laptop now won't work on net. It shows network connected but I can't ping any sites or open any on mozilla or IE. I use Sygate Personal Firewall but even when I am in "allow all" mode it still doesn't work. It seems like activity is being blocked but that wouldn't be the case in "allow all" mode. When I click on network connections I have noticed that the activity for sent and received Bytes are very low (100-300). All the IP addresses are the same on both. I have checked over and over. Is any more information needed?

Any ideas where to start or what to do, it is driving me crazy?????

When you say the IPs are the same what do you mean by this? Also, what IP is being assigned to your machine? Try pinging 72.14.207.99 as this is one of the IPs for Google. If the pings succeeds, this means you have an internet connection but your having a problem with DNS and should check to see if your machine has been given IPs for DNS servers. If the ping still fails, I'd checkout your gateway (router in most cases) to see if there is a mis-configuration. Try swapping out the cable with another CAT5e cable and see if that helps also.
 
When I say the IP's are the same I meant that the IP address for the connection to the net are the same which means it isn't not working because I have the wrong IP entered for the laptop under network connection.

So I pinged the IP given above for google and nothing :( I have checked all the settings and the gateway settings and the one on the laptop is the same as the one on the desktop that is working fine.

I do under connections have a connection other than my Local Area Connection that is disabled.(titled 1394 connection) When I was entering in the correct IP addresses(for using internet where I am) I remember something coming up saying that the ip address (for my connection) was being used and if I used the same info for this connection it could do something to system configuration but since it is disabled I didnt think that could be causing any problems.

How do you check the gateway to see if there is a mis-configuration??

Is your current network layout as such:

WAN<-->Modem<-->Router<-->(to computers)

Because if you are behind a router, DHCP will take care of handing out IPs for your machines which means you don't have to assign them yourself. A gateway is simply a home networking router in your case. Usually you can access the router via typing in the IP of the router into your browsers address bar and that will bring you to the logon i.e. 192.168.1.1.

I am not using a router. The internet cable goes directly into the computer. All I do when I want to use the laptop is unplug the cable from the desktop and plug the cable into the back of the laptop. Would the link you provided still apply to me?

I've checked everything again and can't find anything diiferent settings wise between desktop and laptop. When I ping my own ip address I get a respons back but any other address and request times out :(

I had no problems switching back and forth until the other day when I started having this problem. I think I had this problem like 2 years ago and can't remember what was the problem, somehow I fixed it but I can't remember what it was. Would a hijack this log help?

When you directly plugged into your modem, it should also assign the computer an IP via DHCP since the modem is to a certain extent a DHCP server. I'd make sure the computers are configured to obtain an address automatically and try giving the modem a hard reset to see if that helps. The gateway on each computer should be the modem itself and should not have the same IP as the computers because this will cause a communication conflict between the modem and computer. Also, the modem should give your computers your ISPs DNS server addresses so you will be able to resolve domain names.
 
I have had this problem myself after vacation. The IT told me to disable the connection then after a few seconds re-enable werks fer me
