Conroe Processors

What do you think of the Conroe line? I am hearing that the mid class processors will obliterate the 5000+ x2s?

But what kinda prices are we looking here? I can't seem to find anything on them!

I am building a new computer next week. $2500 limit! Someone on the board built it for me and I was psyched! But the price drop has given me (Plus leftover cash) just about 600 unused dollars!

I really want the best system I can buy for $2500. I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. Everything else I need so I want to make it as good as I can. Although I must admit I do want a 19" widescreen monitor that my local PC store is selling for $280. :-)

Anyway... can anyone give me some information on the Conroes? Should I wait for them? How long? What kinda prices? I always loved my AMDs! So i'm sooo confused!

if you really need a pc now get an amd x2 the prices have dropped dramatically but if you can wait i would get a conroe

what will you do with your PC? Conroe is very good for gaming appenrently, so WAS AMD. AMD droped their prices, so if you think the economic way, go with AMD. Gaming, Conroe.
But for me, i would go with Intel :P ;) multitask.
So tell us what you plan to do with your PC.

Doh! I forgot to post that! I will be doing mostly gaming. I love awesome graphics so I will definitely be buying games to test the systems power.

But I will be doing the basic crap. Surfing the net, videos, music, etc... nothing crazy. Gaming is of the utmost important. I am also under the influence that an awesome gaming PC will do everyday tasks no problem.

you could afford sli 7900gtx's and an fx-62 couldnt you? bout 450 bux a pop for the cards and about 900 for the processor leaves 700 for the rest which should cover it.

i looked it up on newegg and you could afford fx-62, sli 7900gtx's, 2GB OCZ Gold, Enermax 600W SLi ready PSU, MSI K9N Platinum AM2, your choice of case, and your choice of sound card.

amd is STILL good for gaming, there isn't a game out there that my system can't handle on high res.
while the conroe might be the cats ass right now, i still figure your graphics cards are more important than processor speed. considering i can still play any game on my 3400+ with a 6600 gtx oc with little if any lag on 1280x1024.

Why not get the Core 2 Duo Extreme?

because the core 2 due is about 200 more and its not like the fx-62 will be slightly outdated for a few years.

If you have the money, than get the Conroe! I just got it myself and it is amazying! So far it blows anything i through at it. And i know that it is better than AMD FX62 because i had that before.

Where did you bought your conroe?

x1900xtx in crossfire would be a better option to the 7900gtx's which can be had for about 900 total. And if you could get conroe, even the $600, or somewhere around there, was beating the fx-62 so the fx-62 will be outdated soon. So that is like $1900. Thats a little tight for the rest of the computer, but you can always go with a 7950gx2 which will lack in performance to xtx's in crossfire or gtx's in sli, but only by a few fps, a good cheaper alternative.

Edit: As I look a little more if you want to get your comp in the next week or two you are most likely going to have to go with teh gx2 if you go with conroe. As far as I know I don't know if there are any mobo's that support core 2 and crossfire that are available already, and as for sli, well at least about a month or two ago intel was planning on not making sli available at least on their mobo's which means that it will be up to the other mobo manufactures to come up with these which probably will be released a little later on. Ok well I have found some mobo's on newegg with 2x pci-e 16x slots, but they don't state whether they are crossfire or sli compatible so who knows.

NOTE: At the moment the only chipsets that support the core 2 duo are the intel 975X and the 965
The 975X support crossfire, the 965 does not support crossfire
BUT at the time of writing this, NO intel chipset supports SLI.

You need to consider this when purchasing dual video card for a core 2 duo rig in the early day.

New SLI/Conroe chipset are on the way, and should be popping up in late q3-q4

well seeing that the E6600 beat the FX-62 in almost all games and benchmarks, i'm guessing the Core 2 Extreme would beat the FX-62 even more. And he does have $2500, it's not like he can't afford it.

Ok now is definately not the time to buy conroe. Unless that is you want to pay like an extra $350 for the extreme edition.
Newegg Finally has it and only for $1,359.99
