Conroe Question

I'm planning to upgrade my computer in the near future, and I've read that Conroe is goign to be a pretty big bang for your buck.

So i was wondering, since i'm on a budget, is it worth buying the lower-end Core 2 Duo which is 1.83ghz, 2mb L2 and 183$.

Will I be better off buying a different cpu for ~180$, or is Conroe the best choice for me.

It's probably noteworthy that I play a few games as well as multi-task.

Im currently on a 1.7ghz p4. Obviously i'll need a new motherboard, are the ones compatible with Conroe goign to be expensive?

not very expensive
and i think getting the Conroe is the right choice
it's my personal opinion

Yes it would be my choice too. On the mobo, I have seen on another thread that they have found a mobo for $60 that can run conroe. This mobo have 1x agp and 1x pic-e x16 and 4x pci slots.

If the max you can spend is 180 then Conroe would be the best choice.

That motherboard is nice for a budget, it probably has an AGP 4x/8x.

If it has pci-e 16x then I would buy a card for that.

The one he's talking about supports DDR/DDR2, and AGP/PCI-E.

Awesome

This is great news, because I indeed have a PCI-E ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

At least I hope I do, I'm pretty sure it was on the box when i bought it.

Any way to check?

Also, the RAM shouldn't cost too much should it?

No, you don't - there's no such card. ATI's entire 9 series was AGP only.

Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Display will tell you which video card you have, CPU_Z can tell you your interface. Take a look at Questions 101.

That board's performance is reasonably poor, but it's well priced, and will support your video card regardless of its interface.

It won't be great on modern games, but will last you for a while if you're on a tight budget, provided you're happy with low-medium settings on newer games. If you can afford ~$140 for a 7600GT, it would be a great upgrade.

One of the benefits of that board is that you can keep your current card for now, and upgrade to a PCI-E card at any point in the future.

How come it's not a good card? I bought it for $200 2 years ago.

But I don't have money in my budget for a new video card right now.

That's the nature of computers, they outdate quickly. 9800Pros are somewhat inferior to 6600GTs, which are in turn inferior to 7600GSs (sub-$100 cards).

Don't you mean AGP and PCI only? They do have PCI versions of the 9000/9200, as well as some later models I believe.

But you are correct in saying that there were no PCI-E versions made available./
