Firstly front panel wiring...

Am I correct to assume that powerswitch/reset/speaker plugs orientation on the mobo is not important? My elcheapo case doesn't label all wiring with + or - or ground so I guess those not labelled don't matter.

My case came with wiring for front panel audio for HD Audio or AC97 option. Its unlikely I'll use the audio inputs on the case at the moment but which one am I (or my growing kids) most likely to use in the future?

Secondly, my case came with a fan, is it better to connect it directly to the motherboard or to the PSU?

Yes, it matters how you have the connection on the mobo. The colored wire is the positive. Another indication is that the labeling on the connector should face the bottom of the case, unless the connections are vertical instead of horizontal. Which motherboard do you have?

Use the hd audio if the motherboard you are using has hd audio.

Use the connection on the motherboard for the fan if you can.

I think I've got it nearly sorted out now. The only part that I can't find specific info on is this chassis fan that came with the case. It has a 3 pin connector, connected into a 2 pin(pos/neg/+1 blank) connector that is piggybacked off a male and female 4 pin IDE type power plug. If that makes sense.

The motherboard(ASUS P8Z68-V-LX) has 2 x 4-pin 'gnd/fan pwr/fan in/fan pwm' (CHA_FAN 1 & 2 ) connectors and a 3-pin 'gnd/+12v/rotation' (PWR_FAN ) connector.

As far as I can tell the fan connector will work in any of these 3 places but wasn't sure if it made a difference or should I only connect to the 3-pin fanpwr?

I just plug case fans into a 4 pin molex power connector. You can use the 2/3 pin on a board fan header, if you want to control the fan speed.
