Controlling a computer over a network

I can't seem to find what I want when I search, although I would've though it would be a fairly commen request...

I've got a loud old computer I don't want in my living room.

I'd like to put that computer next to my router, and use the ethernet cable running to the living room to control it.

How can I send mouse, keyboard, and video down an ethernet wire, or is it even possible?

What OSes are you running on each machine?

Nice slow response here - I've got a few computers I could use, a G4 with 10.*** (whatever the latest is), or an athlon64 running xp and ubuntu.

I've since actually thought about this, and I'd need to get audio signal down the cat5 as well.

The problem isn't a software one, it's more about finding the right hardware. Cheap KVMs aren't easy to find, and finding one with a couple of USB ports and a minijack is a joke.

This looks pretty great but it's nearly £300, I could just buy a mac mini and have near silence with that. I need one of the buggers for £50 or it's pointless...

So you want to remotely use your desktop through your network it sounds like. I've only done this once and i used "Remote Desktop" in Windows XP Pro. It required me to create a account with a password on the PC i wanted to remotely control. Once i did that i enabled remote desktop in the windows firewall settings. Then i used remote desktop connection to connect to the PC with its ip. This was on a LAN so the ip was something simple like 192.168.0.001 I was only partially happy with the results because i needed to log into the computer everytime i turn it on before i could remotely access it. Hope this helps a little bit. Unless i misunderstood what your looking for in that case, good luck.

ya don't have to with realvnc. you can even reboot and log in.
im using some free software that will even allow turning the computer on.
only on the lan side though. i haven't figured out how to turn on from the wan
yet.
another adventure.........

the proggy to wake up if your interested was wol (wake on lan).
it works. really don't have a lot of use for it except if i was out of town and the computer was off and no one home).
