First you need a dvd ripper. try Google.
Compression is a whole different topic. To do it right with a small file size and decent quality takes some good software and a lot of learning.

DVDs are MPEG2 so all you really have to do is a MPEG2-->MPEG1 transcode. I assume that your source video is in IFO/VOB so simply do a DVD rip (say something like DVDDecryptor or Smartripper) and then dump it using something like DVDx which is a basic userfriendly app)i was wondering how can I convert dvd's to mpeg then compress them to the small screen
Thats assumign you rip to MPEG4 or similar ... if you're ripping to MPEG1/2 then it's time based rather than size-based which exceed the capacity of a DataCD)The ripper will automatically compress them to about 700Mb for a 2-3 hour movie
Except DVDShrink (which is kewl, i know the programmer, neat guy) is for DVD ops ... meaning MPEG2, not MPEG1check out dvdshrink, its a free compressor and is pretty good. dvdshrink.org

Actually i just read the thread again ... why is this a problem? Just play the DVD as you normally would, DVDs, like almost every video format, will scale themselves....
i just bought a iaudiox5
