Convert GPT to MBR

Hi everyone,

My name is Chris; I'm new both here and to computers in general.

I have a quick question: How can I convert my GPT hard drive to MBR?

I have an HP Pavilion laptop with a 500 GB hard drive that boots Windows 8.1.

It's OK if I accidentally screw something up on it; it only cost me 300 dollars or so. I basically bought it to play around with. So, I'm willing to be adventurous.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm not too familiar with Win 8, but if it's anything like the previous OS's you should be able to go into the control panel | Administrative tools | Computer management | Storge | Disk management. Then you would format to MBR. If this is the main drive I would give Ease us Partition Master a try. That might have the option.

Edit- You will need Partition master. It's free. http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/GPT-disk-partition-manager/convert-gpt-disk-to-mbr-disk.htm

Thanks. I found it, but the "convert to MBR" is grayed out. Will the program above help?

Is there a reason or just to try it? If you are willing to reinstall everything and don't care about data retention you really can't screw it up beyond recovery, you can always return the disk to a factory(ish) state by deleting the partition tables and recreating them with an OS installer or another bootable tool like gparted

Mission accomplished. I just used diskpart to delete all the protected partitions and then converted to MBR.
