Convert VHS to DVD

OK, so I've got some old, old vhs home movies that I'd like to get onto dvd to preserve them before they turn to dust. What are my options to get them onto my pc so I can burn them to dvd's? See my sig below for my system specs. I don't really have any special software so I'll be using basic XP and ATI tools. I also have Nero 7 Ultra.

Thanks

Ive been doing this recently aswell. First of all you need some way of getting the videos onto your computer as a file, like a TV card for example (thats what I used) using AV phono connectors, then record it using some software (I used avertv as it came with my card) then record it in the right format, or get a converter and use nero to make it into a dvd. I didnt try experimenting with Nero to capture DVD's, I might try it. The fundamental bit is getting some way of putting the data onto your computer from the vhs

so my X1950XT that has VIVO capabilities should be able to capture the video from a vcr? I might give it a try and see what I get. If it's not very good then I might look at a stand alone converter.

yeh, as long as you've got some software to record the captured video with it should work. the plus side is that you can check what the video looks like before you put it onto a dvd aswell.
