coolant

hey, i recently ran out of coolant for my watercooling system, its basicly water running through and can get pretty hot, does any one know the best coolant for preformance thats under 15 bucks, i dont need the non conductive stuff since i heard its not good in preformance, and i havnt had any problems with leaking for a long time. If any 1 has any suggestions for really good coolant let me know, and any color except green lol.

I always used about a 50/50 mix of distillied water and automotive antifreeze. It worked well.

Distilled water is fine, I prefer it without any additives because for the most part it is non-conductive and shouldn't damage components. Heat wise, it is actually better then ordinary coolant.

Also it can be found at almost any grocery store.

Just don't drink the stuff! !

Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water

During nearly 19 years of clinical practice I have had the opportunity to observe the health effects of drinking different types of water. Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like
  • parasites
  • chlorine
  • fluoride
  • dioxins
Many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear me say that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous.
Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970's when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.

I don't see how it can be bad, it just doesn't have the minerals in it.

I didn't read the article yet though.

Besides the automotive type of antifreeze the article at the link posted earlier points out the various additives and premixed coolants being sold. You could eventually try each out on it's own until seeing what works best there. Using a lower priced protective additive along with distilled water seems the preferred option however.

Bad nix? Two different coolants would tend to cancel each other's effectiveness out or see a chemical reaction of some type causing more heat depending what the base chemicals were in each. Even while that would be minor one would simply dilute the other. That's why I mentioned trying each one out separately to see what will actually work the best on the setup there.

The first link there is for an anitfreeze type mix you add to distilled water. That's a general purpose mix for any setup. The second is one brand's own coolant for their own cooling systems seen there. You may see problems using that unless you have that brand of cooling system in use while it stil is a 100% premix there.

I just relized since I'm running purified water that can possibly have a few minerals. today I'm going to cleanout the system and use 50/50 antifreeze I read a bit about it, but I don't know how I am gonna flush the curent liquid out without spilling it

It can be very tricky, what I did with my system before installing it was I poured the water out of the reservoir, disconnected one of the tubes from the reservoir, placed that in an empty bucket, and then took the other line and placed it in a gallon jug of distilled water, then let the pump run for a bit.

wow i just drained the whole system, it looked like dirty oil like almost black?? id this from corosion or the pieces of the pump. i just filled it up twice with fresh anti freeze until pure yellow was draining from one tube, but i spilled some by accident on the bottom of the case only and i saw a 4 pin molex soaked. it still turned on but when i saw it i shut it off imediatly and put a fan facing on the bottom of the case and im currently using a laptop now while i let it completly dry off, but i am amazed how black the liquid was

The first lot of distilled water saw no anticorrosion additive like The Beast was referring to earlier. With the new mix that will be reduced as long as the additive has protective properties as well as seeing lower temps.

You were smart to shut it down fast since you don't want anything shorted out from a spill. With a fan and careful inspecation with a dry non linting dry cloth like a hanky you should see that dried out soon. Just be cautious when going to work on any liquid cooling setup to avoid spills.
