Cooling for 4870?

holy ****. my 9800gt crashes after 70c. i just downloaded msi afterburner and set up a profile so when it reaches 55c the fan goes to 60%, 60c it goes to 80% and 65c it goes to 100%. it has never gone over 55c

Yeah, I know, the 4870 can take some serious heat. I think the max is somewhere around 90C, they run hot anyways, with stock HSF and Artic Silver 5, the lowest temp I got was 52C (stock settings as well).
So? Suggestions?

The max should be over 100c actually. GPU's are built to take the heat.

Do you just leave the fan on auto? What speed is the fan if you set it to the loudest setting you desire? Like for me, my 8800gts, anything more than 60% just gets too loud.

My 8800gts idles at 74c if I leave the fan on auto. But just setting the fan to a still almost silent 55%, it idles at 44c and gets up to ~65c while gaming which is perfectly fine.

Yeah, I keep it auto, at around 33%, it's manageable, at 50%, it's unbearable, and if I set it at 33%, I don't know how high the temps'll get.

I've never had a card that 50% was loud at all. Thats crazy. You got a pic of this card? Or like a newegg link to the exact model? I want to see what type of fan it has.

That card isnt very loud at 50% imo, either you have a dead silent rig or theres something wrong with the stock cooler.

Honestly, there's a lot to be desired of my rig ("dead silence,") but I know for sure that the GPU is the loudest thing in there.

honostly, your temps ar efine, just up the fan a bit and your good. you have a card that is for gaming and runs warm by nature, so your expectations of a silent pc is unrealistic on air cooling
