im curently building a gaming rig, single video card.

if im not planning on overclocking, do i need to get a aftermarket cooler?

or would i be alright without it?

I think you're ok with a stock cooler - but others may disagree. Your CPU is warrantied to be used with the OEM coolers that come with the retail CPU package. If it's going to keep you from getting a better video card or other important component - I would skip the premium CPU cooler and make sure ya get a case with decent air flow. You can always add an aftermarket cooler later if you want to. Just make sure you get the pins installed properly in the MOBO - when installing the OEM cooler.

I just replaced my OEM cpu cooler that came with my core i7 ( about 6 mo worth of usage ) b/c it always ran a little warmer than I wanted ( though not in any danger zone ). The v8 dropped my CPU temps 10-20 degrees from the OEM cooler depending on the CPU usage.

The OEM Core i7 cpu cooler design attracted dust like crazy. Almost choked on the dust from the thing after I blew some compressed air on it. So go in there periodically with compressed air and blow it out.
