Copy-Protect my Files?

Is it possible to copy-protect files so that certain files on my computer can't be copied or transferred? The files can still be accessed like normal, but just can't be copied.

I know you can do this in Mac OSX, but I'm using XP. Is there some program that I can download to do this?

Thanks.

Your requirements are something of a contradiction. You cannot lock a file to prevent it being copied, but allow it to be accessed normally. Let's say you have an image pic01.jpg that you allow to be opened in Photoshop. In Photoshop you simply save the image as pic01.jpg in another folder. File copied.

Programs such as Folder Lock allow you to password protect or encrypt but that is a different matter. Access to the file is hindered.

Can you give an example of what you want to do or have I shot down your idea completely?

Let's say we rule out that saving example. Because their music files, so common media players don't have the option of saving.

I just don't want someone to copy my music files, but I still want to be able to listen to them regularly. Can I still do it?

Who are you trying to stop from copying your music? Another user? A network connection? You say common media players don't have the option of saving, Windows Media Player does for a start.

I think it's impossible per se, there may be a way to indirectly stopping copying, such as password protecting your user area.

I think you're on a hiding to nothing with files on your pc. It just isn't possible (while maintaining easy access).

One surefire method is simply to transfer all files to cd or dvd (as data files, not music cds) and insert the disk to play. You can get at least 5000 high quality mp3 on a dvd. A lot more at 128Kbps. For mega music storage go to an external hdd drive and take it with you. For max portability use mp3 player or jump drive.

Yuep, i second that.

Let's rule out all the complicated scenarios of saving, etc.

Is it possible to just stop someone from using the "ctrl-c" and "ctrl-v" functions (copy-paste) on certain files? and prevent drag-and-drop?
