Copying Files off hard drive with unkwon formating

Ok, so i have this hard drive out of a "device". It is obviously not FAT or NTFS haha. I hooked it up to my computer (running windows 7, i also have a Linux machine if i would be better off using that). I went to computer management/storage/disk management and found my drive as Disk 5, it said 149.05gb unallocated, so I went in and assigned it a drive letter but did not format! Windows now "detects it" but says it needs to be formatted. I have tried opening a prompt and doing it from there but get "make sure this is not corrupted blah blah blah". Is there a way to copy the stuff off and look at it given these conditions?

You'll probably have the best chance with the linux machine, it doesn't look like the hard drive is locked in anyway.

You need something like R-Studio which knows a whole lot of a different filesystems. Scan the disk with it and see if it picks up some Linux filesystem.
