Core 2 Duo + 7900GT SLI/7900GTX ??

I like to play FPS games, record TV/movies, and edit/burn DVDs but unfortunately my laptop cannot handle a lot of things so I am getting a new desktop. I am also new to SLI/Crossfire setups but I have priced 2 NVIDIA graphics cards within my budget. Which of these combinations would I best be served by?

System 1: E6600 + 7900GT SLI
System 2: E6700 + 7900GT SLI

System 3: E6600 + 7900GTX
System 4: E6700 + 7900GTX

the 7900GTX is a better card, only at higher resolutions will you see an improvement with the SLI'd 7900GTs, plus less heat, plus less power consumpion with the 7900GTX.

Ah, I see. I've been reading through the sticky and online reviews/comparisons and that looks more and more like the setup I will chose. Thanks!

WORD..The man know what he's talking about.

System 2, the e6700 would open up the potential, and sli'd 7900gt's would blow the gtx away, like with the 7800gt and 7800gtx the performance difference between the cards in a single card set up was under 10%, thats not worth and extra $150 for minimal performance gain. You could always get a gx2 with the e6700 too. Pretty much option 2 combined into 1 card.

the 7900GTX out preforms SLI 7900GTs.... and less strain on a system with less heat

ugh bball....

the SLI 7900GTs cost roughly $100 more then a single 7900GTX
the heat from two of thoes cards mean that you have to get what? extra cooling did you say? no you didnt mention it, because you didn't count it as a factor...

7900GTs=$580~
Extra cooling=$20~
Power supply to serve the needs of the cards=$130
$730

7900GTX=$470~
no added cooling=$0.00
Power supply=$80
$550

$730
-$550
=$180

now... $180 for MINIMAL extra preformance, a louder case due to higher CFM fans, and who's to say he plays FEAR, Oblivion, PREY, or Crysis on its maximum setting? and when Crysis comes out, he should be looking at getting another 7900GTX as an upgrade and worry about it then. and even then, who's to say he wont have a 8000 series?

Wow, since when did he say anything about price, or needing a power supply, and no you don't need extra cooling, as long as you have a good case with some good airflow, you will be fine. A gtx will produce quite a bit more heat then a gt, it will also draw more power. THe 7900 series anyway is known to be less powerhungry then the 7800 series and so are conroes. If you want a decent psu it will work for both. And you can easily get two evga 7900 gts for $250 a piece so that $500 we will say $520 for shipping and stuff. All of a sudden, wow they aren't that much more expensive. He said he wanted the combination that would serve him the best, and that would be the sli.

well, i went by most expensive, so you CAN get a GTX at $420

and while im at it,
EVERYONE ON THIS DAMNED FORUM TELLS EVERYONE ELSE NOT TO SLI CHEAPER CARDS AND IF IT AN OPTION TO GET ONE GOOD CARD

so im sorry if you dont agree, but in MY personal experiance in high ranking parts and crap in a rig I would go with a single 7900GT... and besides, who says SLI would work better on a Conroe board compared to an AMD rig? SLI might not be as good on a Conroe system

dude a 7900gt is a high end card, so is the gtx, its not like its 7600 in sli vs a 7900gtx. And when did I ever say anything about sli working better with conroe then am2?

And he was asking for our opinions I gave mine, its not my fault you are so uptight when someone doesn't agree with you. The gt's will outperform the gtx there is no way you can deny that.

i'd go with system # 1 and overclock it. either that or system number three. the 7900gt's in SLI have more processing power, but the 7900gtx has more memory. if the 7900gt's each have 512mb then theres no real point to getting a 7900gtx. this is because SLI doesn't use the memory on both cards, the memory just gets mirrored. so the only real advantage of the 7900gtx is that it has more memory... its higher clocks also give a slight advantage in some games, but in general the 7900gt's (if they have 512mb) will definitely last much longer and take much longer to become outdated.

Ya what card would you be getting a 7900gtx 256mb version or 512mb version, that makes a big difference, I have been comparing the 256MB versions.

if you have cash for sli i'd just go with one 7950x2
then sli when more support comes out for quad core.

or by then upgrade to the next card, whichever.

Thanks for all of the opinions guys. I ended up going with system 4. The 7950GX2 would of just put me over my spending limit. If I need more then I'll just ask Santa for another 7900GTX or whatever's out by then. :)

Here´s a little advice: Do buy a E6600 because it´s the same processor as E6700 exept for extra 2000MHz.. Both have 4Mb L2 cahce and all.. E6700 is just factory overclocked and you can overclock your E6600 that 2000MHz and you´ll have E6700 for less money..
