Core 2 Duo E6850 & a Dell 5100

Yep a match made in heaven!

I have an old Dell 5100 with the Intel 945G chipset and a P4 3.2 GHz CPU. I recently bought a new CPU for it, a Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz (E6850 .65) thinking that it should work on this board, but sadly it aint. According to Intel's site the 945G chipset supports the Core 2 Duos.

What have I missed? Probably the obvious. I updated the BIOS from Dell's site, but that BIOS update was only 2006.

945 chipsets only support up to 1066mhz FSB's, the E6850 has a 1333FSB. Sorry man but it won't work.

If you want to upgrade you're best bet is the E4500, it is far better than your current P4.

Would the E4700 work? It's a 2.6GHz cpu. Also is there any benifit with the CORE 2 DUO E6420 (2.13GHZ) it has a FSB1066 and 4MB cache. I'm just not too sure and don't want to buy a new CPU again and waste more money!
