Core 2 Duo E8400 or Xeon E3110?

I have a Core 2 Duo E8400 and a Xeon E3110 that I pulled out of some Dell PC's my employer was throwing out. I currently have an eMachines desktop with a Athlon II x2 250 3.0ghz, I added a ATI HD5450 video card and am using it as an HTPC. Although the cpu is struggling with HD content and I really want to try out some of the frame doubling scripts in FFDShow, but the Athlon just cant do it. Would I see much difference building a system around either of the Intel cpu's I have?
 
I doubt it. They're a little better, but the effort you'd go through to set it up isn't worth it. From what I can tell, both processors are essentially the same. I'd sell them both, maybe even your Athlon too, take the money you'd use for the intel mobo and pick up either a Athlon X4 for a hundred bucks or just go all out and get a Phenom 2 1055T/1090T. You'd have to check the manufacturer's site to make sure that your motherboard supports them, but if you need more processing horsepower, you won't find it with those you've salvaged unfortunately.
 
Those are both great dual-core processors you pulled out of the systems they were tossing out.

You should be able to get at least $50 per processor. I wish I had an extra $50. I would make you a $50 offer for the Core 2 Duo E8400.

Edit: Might I also add the following information. To upgrade you are likely going to have to buy a new motherboard, power supply, processor and video card. The power supply that came with your present E-Machines system is poor quality.

^ Really? Definitely think Im gonna try to unload them and buy an AMD upgrade for my current desktop, just 90 more posts till I can use the For Sale section, lol.
 
To build a new LGA 775 system around the Intel processors you have would cost just as much as building a new Core i3 rig. I would sell them and put it toward new hardware.

+1 to that....I3's rock and would be excellent for what you want.

That being said, if you have enough hardware to build a 775 setup already, the E8400 is quite a bit better than the Athlon II 250.

^note they only had a 255 for comparison so the Athlon is even 100 mhz higher clock!
 
And sadly people are still paying $170 at NewEgg.com for a brand new Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale Processor.

The Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Wolfdale (2.93 gigahertz) is a around 10 percent slower than the Core 2 Duo E8400 and it is only $80.
