You will find there that the clock speed is not the only difference:

"As noted above there is a small clock speed difference between the two products, there is also one significant feature for the enthusiast market. Whereas previous Extreme CPU's came with increased cache or HT the Core 2 Extreme comes with a very useful feature – an unlocked multiplier. If the Extreme processor is to be over clocked the unlocked multiplier opens up huge performance tweaking options. That said, there is a huge price difference between the 2.93 and 2.66 GHz models and if you aren’t a hard core overclocker it would be hard to justify the extra expense."

But read the whole article, TBH I would get extreme, but I guess you wouldnt use the extra overclocking abilitys...

The Extreme's are short for the Core 2 Duo Extreme or Quad Extreme. The difference is that the extreme models have unlocked multipliers.
 
I personally think that the unlocked multipliers are a waste of money, as the P965 and P35 chipsets overclock so well that even with low multis, you can reach the top end of the processors.

Yes but the idea of unlocked multipliers is that the FSB wont become a bottleneck. But as you said, some of the P965 and P35 boards can handle very high FSB's before becoming unstable.
 
they are 2 dual cores stuck together and dont exactly function as "one"

the same as how the pentium d's were two pentium 4's

they dont have a pooled cache too.
