Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo

my neighbor has a macbook pro with a core duo processor. he's always bragging about it. i just realized tonight that it's a core duo, not a core 2 duo.

i brought it to his attention that he has a core duo, and not a core 2 duo, and they're not the same. he asked me what the difference was, and i didn't know what to tell him. we both theorized that the core duo was just a lower end c2d, almost like a mobile version (c2d.....m?)

are we even close?

so it came before the c2d. what's different? fsb? clock speed? cache size? what would be the benefit of upgrading?

The benefit is you get a little more performance for about the same battery life. ed: I'd wait to upgrade, Core Duo is still quite good.

Simply put: C2D has more of almost everything. Cache, FPUs, ALUs, scheduler entries, decoders, etc.

gotcha. thanks, now i got some ammo to use in my neverending pc/mac arguement i have with ths guy.

The C2D is based on a totally different architecture than the CD

No its not, its almost identical. The Celeron M, Pentium M, Core Solo, Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo are all instances of the Core architecture (the Core's were based off of the Pentium M's to begin with).

Dual core technology refers to two individual microprocessors on a single die cast chip. This is essentially two computer processing units (CPUs) in one. The advantage of a dual core chip is that tasks can be carried out in parallel streams, decreasing processing time. This is referred to as thread-level parallelism (TLP).

core2duo works as one processor workin as two at the same time were are dual core is two processors working together at a fast rate

nice copy and pasted definition of dual core there mate but it has nothign to do with what we're discusiing here. We all know what dual core is. and you didnt even get it right, dual core is two cores on one chip, not two chips working together, that would be dual CPU or twin processor systems

arnt the core duos only in notebooks and when the core 2 duo came out thats when they were made for desktops as well? (i know there are mobile core 2's)
