core i5-WTF??! future of core i7 uncertain???

so here i am aboot to build a new core i7 920 system and i read an article on the new core i5 chip that apprently has a totally different socket!?!?!?! WTF???

does this mean that intel will NOT produce any more core i7 chips for the future?

as it stands now i'm getting the bottom of the line core i7 chip (the 920) and although its the most powerful / affordable chip on the market, it is still their bottom of the line core i7 chip meaning that i want to upgrade to a better one in 2 years or so. whewww, that was a long sentence :)

thoughts please ?????

ps: sorry, i can't find the original article anymore :(

well, i have no problem with the idea that in 3 years a new socket will come out, that is the way it works. your athlon xp is probably a socket a right? well, since then, they have had the 754, the 939, the AM2, AM2+, and are about to make the switch to AM3 soon i believe.

its just the opposite if i remember correctly, the i5 is going to have a short run of being a budget setup, as the average motherboard is around $200

After 28 years in the computer business I've learned that worrying about coming technologies is pointless because there are always coming technologies. If you wait for the "latest" you wait forever. If you need a computer, get what you need and don't spend any time worrying about the future. You can deal with that when it comes.

thanks for the advice but will intel still make i7 chips in the future?
is i5 the lower end mid range chip and i7 the higher end enthusiast chip?

@lovely - i saw that i5 will come in the 3rd quarter which is hardly waiting 3 years mate.

From what I remember, there will be 2 or 3 sockets being sold and developed at the same time.. high end, mid range, and low end.

Yep, that's so Intel can gouge that extra dollar out of buyers.

Yeah - but just think of all the money you're saving

:D

i7 is still going to be the best. i5 is a different, budget cpu that they are developing. they are also developing mobile processors that are quad core in the future.

think of the i5 as intels way of raping amd. lol.

i have to say, 5-6 years ago i was a FIRM amd supporter but the last developments in both camps during the last 2 years have swayed me towards INTEL and now i'm going to order a i7 920 tomorrow!
its a shame they could not have used the same socket for the i5's. it just would have made everyone's life much much easier.

looks like its quad-core for me for a few years. looking forward to 8 and 12 cores :)

and just off topic a bit, why has the computer industry gone off of the GHz bandwagen and concentrated more on core's instead? 2GHz was the go 4 years (or something like that) ago and now were only at 2.66GHz, albeit with multiple cores.

I believe it has something to do with the development of processors hitting a wall. They couldn't practically keep pushing for higher frequencies when better architecture and multiple cores yielded much better performance for less cost. Although I do kind of wish there was some kind of 12Ghz P8 by now, I'm not exactly a hardware developer, so I'll deal with the lack of epic I guess.

i don't think it's that smart of an idea personally. you can get 1 AM3 or AM2+ motherboard, and go from a 45w $40 cpu, to a $230 PII 940 (not sure on exact price :P) on the same board, Intel doesn't leave alot of room for upgrades.
