Hi all,
i was watching a hd movie last nite and my core i7 860 hit 70c.
its not oc'd and am just using the stock cooler.
Most of the time its hovers around 30c or 40c.
i use a program called core temp running in my taskbar to keep an eye on things.
Surely it shouldnt get to 70c when not under full load.
The fan speed is set to standard.its too loud on turbo so dont want to use this setting.
should i invest in some paste and another cooler just to be on the safe side?

Probably normal, my i7-920 was 80c under a load with the stock cooler and no OC, it is now 65 with the Noctua. My i5 is 50 or 55 (cant remember it hit 65 with a 3.3 OC on Prime) under a load and 18-20 idle with the Zalman. Personally I would get a cooler, I do love my Zalman for the 1156 but you need to get the $3 adapter also. There are a lot of good coolers for the 1156 socket.

Was the movie an HD movie? cuz usually from what i know the CPU plays a BIG part in playing HD movies and it really takes a lot of CPU to play them. That's why probably you had higher temps.

Use 100% on stock cooler.. Or buy a new one. Stock coolers suck if not on 100% what so ever.

Yea, but not that much. 2.0 Ghz for 720p and 2.6 ghz for 1080p or so.. A lot is dedicated to the GPU too, most of the work is pulled to the GPU.

Yea, the heat is increased when playing hd movies. but not that much..

Ryeong you're probably right. I knew it has to do something with that but i really did not remember all of it.

yeah it was a 1080p movie.
dont want to run fan at 100% as it too loud.
so i think a better cooler is the option.
any suggestions? i dont OC but something to keep it cool and quiet.
the stock fan is loudest thing in my pc so something quiet would be great

Search up H50. It's a water-cooler.. I ordered one today. It's quiet, MUCH better than any air cooler i know. You'll love water coolers..

Those temps aint nice at all,Are you sure the cooler is seated properly?

Whats the airflow like in your case?

Id highly recommend getting an aftermarket cooler even if you dont plan on overclocking....

If budget is low...

Or higher budget

I read somewhere that the Freezer 7 pro is very quiet....not heard it myself though so....

I get around 50 on idle, and 60 when I play games, with stock cooler, it's a really hot CPU I rekon. But I've got the 930.

I've got an Thermaltake Kandalf case though, just wondering how should I set up air flow? How many fans in, how many out?

The stock cooler can trick you a little bit... when on idle, you can easily compare temps to a higher-end cooler, but on load, the stock cooler is just garbage and doesn't come close to a good, tower cooler.
