Core i7

hey people,

just got a question for you all, whats makes an intel i7 so good?
i heard someone say that it has 8 cores, but i looked on wikipedia and it said it had 4. so is it just clocked really high or what?
And how much better is it than a phenom II 4x 920 black edition or whatever (the best phenom is what i'm trying to say)

it isn't urgent or anything just wondering.

cheers

The core i7 has 4 cores - but something in the architecture lets the 4 cores run 8 separate threads while most quad core CPU's run 4 threads.

B/c of this - heavy multi-tasking - and applications that are coded to take advantage of multi-threaded cpu processes run much faster. i.e. Video editing - and virus software. Imagine a batch of work being done by 4 people - or 8. The 8 people should get the job done faster than the 4.

That's why AMD are considered good gaming chips ( b/c games today don't utilize 8 threads and you get more bang for the buck solely for games. AMD chips are cheaper than intel's - while the intel overall is a better processor.

Generally speaking - hope that helps

Core i7 series processors Hyperthread, turning 4 physical cores into 8 virtual cores.

There's no comparison in performance for multi-threaded applications.

+1 AMD = Budget Build

One of the best Phenom Processors out right now is the Phenom II 965 Quad-Core (3.4 gigahertz) Processor. It can be bought at NewEgg.com right now for $196:

Take a look at these Core i7 and Phenom II Processor comparison charts.

Another great feature that Intel i7 Processors have is Turbo Boost technology. You can read about it here:

Don't get the 965... the 955 overclocks cleaner and beat the 965 in all overclock competitions. If you're looking at graphs comparing 955 and 965 performance, the 965 comes out on top because of the higher clock speed, but the 955 at 3.4GHz beats it.

EDIT: I know this stuff because I had the 965 for a week or so and returned it and got the 955 instead and I'm proud of my decision.

You obviously didn't check the link provided in the post above yours...

wow thanks a ton guys!
on the charts the difference was like 100 or so, is that a big difference?
and how come the tri core was such a fail at the bottom? i swear my Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz does better than that.

cheers!

The 100 points was one Benchmark test. You have to look at specific functions where the Intel i7 920 blows away the AMD 955.

I clicked both processors adn did a compare for ya at this Link

Look at these rows
* Adobe Photoshop
* Image Rendering
* SiSoftware Sandra 2009 SP3 Processor Arithmetic
MFLOPS
* iTunes 8.1.0.52 Audio Transcoding (wav to aac) - Score in Time [seconds - lower is better ]
* and a scan through the rest of the others.

In many application / functions - they are pretty close - but there are others where the Intel core i7 blows the AMD 955 out of the water.

You can also get i5 750

i7 920 doesn't really have advantage over i5 750 in gaming if you use a single video card

cool thanks so much for your help!

even though it wasn't urgent you guys still helped! thanks a ton!

cheers
