I am almost embarased to ask but whats a core, in terms of the latest tech new keeps talking about quad core processors?

You can think of a dual/quad core processor kind of like 2/4 processors crammed onto one chip. They do share some resources, but the individual cores can work on multiple things simultaneously.

In some cases, they actually ARE two processors crammed onto one chip. An old Pentium D is basically two Pentium 4's stuck together...

Same with the core 2 quad, just two core 2 duo's.
