core2 quad vs i7

have been looking at getting a new CPU today and noticed that most (if not none) of the core2 quad's on newegg DO NOT support hyperthreading BUT the few i7's they had, all supported it.

how important is hyperthreading these days? i remember it was much talked about when there were only single cores.

i wouldn't really worry about it anyway, most people turn off hyper threading anyway, that is if you're overclocking anyway

Today it may not mean much even though it could if you use it right... But in a few months or a year tops HT will be quite handy...

I am buying computer shortly and have chosen Core i7 920 over Core 2 quad 9550

your post has alot of anyways, anyway, don't worry anyways because I use anyway in alot of my posts too, anyways. :D

ANYWAYS

Save yourself the money and just buy a quad for now. Well, at least thats what I did :)

Toms has released some new testing on the I7 in $2500 builds. It is with a I7 920 and 3 way Sli gtx 260-216 cards (with the special on evga x58 3 gtx260-216 combo on newegg right now you could build it for a lot cheaper though). The results are pretty good ,alot better than I thought they would be

It even performed better than the $4500 build that uses the Hd4870 X2 in quad crossfire in that build up to 1900 X 1200 res.(It looses out to the quad though due to memory I think in the 2500 X 1600,if you put the 2 Hd 4870 X2's in the I7 are the results I would like to see.)

For scaling the I7's look pretty good if you want to run more than one graphics cards, because of this I think the I7 is the way to have a longer lasting build if you need it to IMO.

- HT Enabled Intel Core i7-965- HT Disabled Performance Difference
3DMark Vantage: CPU Score 19546 14644 +33%
Valve Particle Simulation Benchmark 153 133 +15%
Cinebench R10 Multi-CPU 18569 16067 +15%

WinRAR 3.71 Compression 2:39 3:02 +15%

That's some comparison info from the above linked article. It looks to me like HT is making a difference.

it would be sweet if future apps came prepared for multiple cores AND hyper threading!!

especially high end games and apps like PS and LR
