well my friend says his harddrive is corrupted and he doesnt know why. every thing keeps "locking up".
And he reformatted it with 98' twice and xp once and every thing keeps happening, is there any suggestions perhaps on what to do?
I was wondering if there is some virus removal or adwere needed to be used? instead of buying a new harddrive >.>

my suggestion, probably you have problem in master boot record, so try to remove the partition and make new partition and again try to reformat it. if you fail possibly there is a bad sector in master boot records. but, you can use low-level format to ensure wether it is logically or physically bad sector and it will try to recover.

how does it lock up? after the windows installation? during? after a week? and what happens exactly?

after a few days of installation.

how do i check to see if there is a bad sector in the mastor boot record?

you may want to test the drive first, to see if it's good. Then after that, try some of the other stuff. To test the drive, download DFT, it will create a floppy or a CD. Then boot to it. It will find you HD, then you'll need to run the Advanced Test. It will check every sector of the drive for integrity, (will take a while depending on the size of the drive). In the end, a green screen is good, (no bad sectors), a red screen is bad, (time to buy a new drive).

downloading above is better, but atleast if you installing windows on that, the setup program will inform you and setup will halt if your harddisk have a bad sector.
