Hi all

Thanks in advance for any help it really is greatly appreciated.

Ok my computer was working absolutely fine one day. Completely freezes whilst I was on the internet. Mouse wouldn't respond nor the keyboard. My music stopped playing and the screen completely froze. I waited 1 min then manually restarted the pc. Wouldn't boot up. It got to the bios screen then froze again. Did this a few times. Now however I get nothing on the screen and the light stays orange to show no graphics card/computer is detected.

Because of this I figured it might be a Gfx card problem. I took everything out of the pc and reseated it all. I also reset the CMOS. Turned on pc. All the computer turned on as normal all fans and lights etc (same as before) but the gfx card did not start up and obviously no response from the monitor. This made me believe it was a gfx card problem so put my old one in and booted. Same problem no response from monitor and pc wouldn't boot. Although the fan on this card did start.

This leads me to believe its either the Motherboard thats gone kaput or my power supply. Could it be the power supply? I'm unsure as to whether the rest of the computer would power on and it just not have enough power to power the gfx card. Or would nothing respond if it was the power supply?

I am more than willing to try anything you advise and thanks again for taking the time to read this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

specs :
Nvidia gtx 260 Black Edition
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Asus 780i p5n-t deluxe
OCZ Stealth xstream 700w psu
Maxtor 500gb HD

p.s. I have also tried a different monitor with both graphics cards Same problem.

I once had a problem like that and it was quite a stupid reason. My computer wouldn't start up or anything, and when it did it would crash within a few seconds. You'll never guess what was wrong..
The one clip that holds the RAM in was down.. Check everythings plugged in properly (Inside and outside)

Have you plugged in any USB drives recently?

I've just checked my RAM is in place correctly with the clips clipped inplace. Still same problem. I'm thinking its a piece of hardware thats bust as the computer had been working for a few weeks absolutely fine then randomly stopped working.

I haven't plugged in any usb ports recently no. Have taken absolutely everything out and reseated it all so everything is definitely properly connected.

Thanks

Matt

I'm more for saying that it could be a motherboard problem. If you think about it, it can't really be a dead power supply because you stated that when you turn it on, the fans turn on but your video card doesn't. If it was your power supply, you would get no response at all. I would say that your PCI slot might be fried. How many PCI slots do you have on your motherboard?

Yeah thats what I was wondering about the power supply. Wasn't sure if it could partially power the pc even if it was bust. Got 3 PCI slots. Tried the gfx card in two of the slots. Would it be worth testing the third? No need to answer that :) I'll post back in a minute with my results. Feel free to suggest anything else.

Thanks

Matt

Ok tried The graphics card in the 3rd slot which I've never used before. Same problem. Everythign starts including all of the fans except the graphics card and the fan on the graphics card. Looking like its the Motherboard thats broken then? I have read on other forums however of people reporting there PSU's being broken but partially powering the system. Is this likely?

Matt

A Power Supplies 12V rail can just go weak and power the fans and just restart when a load it put on it. If you had or knew someone that had one you could use just to rule it out. That would help. If it still does it I would say your board went to visit its friends in the dead board realm.

Must admit its definitely looking to be either teh mobo or the psu. The only other pus I have that I could try is a 350w. Thats not enough to power my gtx260 but I can try that with the 7600gt in this system that way it would rule out the psu right? Will try that now then. May take me a while so like before I'll report back with my results.

Thanks

Matt

Ok tried a different psu with my spare graphics card (7600gt) exactly the same problem. Fans start up etc. but no response from the monitor. Screen stays black and the light stays orange. This leads me to believe its the Motherboard.

Thanks for all your help. Going to send it back for an RMA unless you suggest otherwise?
