Could it be a virus?

Hi,

Recently, my computer started getting REALLY slow. It started when I accidentally turned off my computer wrong (I bumped the power button in the middle of a program). Now, it is so slow. I don't think it could be a virus because I'm using Norton and Ad-Aware SE Professional. What do you guys think it could be? Anything that I could do to hopefully quicken my computer up?

go to Start> run>type msconfig. then go to the startup tab and uncheck any prgrams you do not want to start when windows starts. I used to use Norton but it uses too many system resources for my liking. Try disabling norton and adaware from scanning realtime, so it doesnt scan every file you use.

Edit: It doesn't seem to be helping much. Anyone else got any other ideas?

At the moment, I don't have time to get all the specs on my computer although I'll try to get you that as soon as possible. For a little update, I just decided to reformat my computer because it was shutting off randomely when I was on it. So now it's doing it again, after I reformated. Anyone know what it could be?
 
You say you shut down your computer accidentally with the power button. If Windows was accessing an important system file just that moment, then you're probably out of luck to get your system back and reformatting is the best choice instead of troubleshooting for hours or days.
 
run chkdsk /f in a cmd prompt or in the Windows XP reapir center on the XP install CD to see if the accidental power off could have created bad sectors in the hard drive.
 
Do you remember what program it was when you accidentally turned off your pc ? Maybe you broke the program, just needs to br ereinstalled,,,,alternately you can do a ctrl + alt + del, click on task manager. you should see some tabs at the top. click on the performance tab first. the graph at the top should be at zero or very close when NO programs are runnung and you are not online. If it is up to 15 - 30 % or higher, you have unwanted guests running on your pc. I have seen one time when a broken program did this, i guess it would not release memory or something. The graph below is the usage of your page file. You can click processes tab , you can find what process might be by terminating processes.
