Could someone tell me the meaning of GDDR3/GDDR5?

As I search for graphics card, I see GDDR3 or for the 4870x2 is says GDDR5. What does that mean? Do I need a DDR3 mobo? I'm a little confused.
 
No you don't need that kind of memory on your motherboard. All it means is the card uses that kind of memory for it's onboard RAM. So for if the 4870x2 says is has 1GB GDDR5 that means the card has 1GB of GDDR5 on it, it doesn't mean that you need 1GB of GDDR5 to be able to use it.
 
Oh I know that, But I was just a little confused with the whole GDDR3/5 things. I just want to make sure the ASUS Rampage will be able to handle it.
