Could XP be the problem?

I installed a illigal copy of XP on my new comp because i didnt have a real copy (it was preinstalled on my other computer), anyway i been having issues since i did with internet explore and firefox, they wont search they only work off of favorites. Its not my internet because i hooked my laptop up and it works fine. Could the reason be that i have a bad copy of windows? I do have a vista upgrade disk but i dont want to use it because it says my onboard graphics ATI HD 3200 arn't compadible with vista and im still picking out my new video card sooo. Also does any1 know the effects of having a bad copy of windows?
 
Foobar ville for sure! You need a full install disk now seen with SP3 to see working results. All you did there was drag all of the other system's board and other drivers and hardware profile over to a totally different system. Don't expect working results.
 
Well i have all the drivers updated and installed that are needed for this system. Also why Sp3 whats wrong with SP2? Don't see SP3 disks much. (well i don't)

SP3 can be downloaded off the net for free.

But i still refused to help you due to it is illegal to have a not legit OS and against forum rules!
 
yeah buy a real copy

dont even try sp3 on your pirate one, it installs WGA and stuff and may get you blacklisted

It took a little time for SP1 disks to be replaced once SP2 was out in 11/2004. Likewise stores will see only new disks stocked with SP3 as the SP2 disks get recycled back to MS.

Once you have a new disk you can a new thread for help with any problems there. But whether a new disk has SP2 or SP3 on it you need a new genuine disk to start with before going any further.
 
you need a genuine and valid key.

as your building a new system , you should be able to get a cheap oem version online
 
Well i have 3 other systems with real copy's of SP2 and a laptop with SP2 can i get updates for them for SP3 for free?
 
yeah just download sp3 from microsoft (google for "Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers" - if you do it this way instead of going through microsoft update, it means you only need to download it once instead of 3 times)
 
WGA means Windows Genuine Advantage that first verifies activation and Windows is genuine. Even with the redistributed 316mb download you still go through that as part of the installation on an actual working copy of Windows.

A clean install with a regular genuine disk is still needed. Any preinstallation is locked to the one machine alone. The answer remains the same you need to get an actual full install disk with it's own valid product number and id.
 
why?

its the same price, if not more expensive?

using a vista upgrade on an illegal copy of xp is illegal, you need to buy a full version
 
With a Vista full install disk the installer will prefer a fresh primary. The obvious move regardless of which version you end up with is to see the drive wiped and start over fresh with a genuine disk and no unwanted clutter from another system including drivers for another board.

Vista here has been running smooth as silk compared to XP on the current build. XP is now only a secondary OS for beta testing and nothing more while still waiting to find a good buy on some updated softwares. The last build still in use by a family member saw XP Pro as the primary OS there.

Having a full install disk and running legit is the always best and smart move. A full install cd for the build allows you to reinstall Windows at any time if needed in the event you get a bug or simply have an oops! :confused:
 
vista upgrade disks arent like xp ones - with xp upgrade, you could just show it your previous version cdrom, whereas with vista you must install from within a fully activated and genuine copy of xp or 2000

however ms are idiot - due to all vista ds including all versions, it lets you install it free-standing if you enter no key and then specify a key once its installed (until then it installs a trial)
 
Well I can tell you that seeing Windows reactivated after a full reinstall with a valid disk has been made far more easier now then when XP first came out. If you goofed and had to reinstall Windows more then once in a certain amount of time you couldn't activate online. You then had to call MS!

Since SP2 and now Vista you can literally reinstall Windows endlessly and see each reinstall automatically activate online provided you are using a genuine disk to begin with since you go through the WGA as part of then seeing the updates. With Vista not having the repair install option as seen with XP you will want a full install OEM or retail disk just in case.
