CPU and Desktop Help

I have decided to put together a new computer due to my monitor burning out on me yesterday. My current computer is about 2 years old and has served me well, here are the current specs of my pc;

Amd Athlon xp3200+ 400fsb (barton) Socket A (64 bit processor)
Gigabyte mother board with nvidia 2 chip set
256mb Nvidia Ge Force 6600 video card
2gb of DDR2 400mhz Ram (generic)
Soundblaster 7.1 surround sound,
500wat power supply.

My computer is working fine and runs 90% of all games I play smoothly on High or Medium graphic settings. (Including the newer games (WoW,Rainbow Six)

I wanted to upgrade simply because there are new parts around and I figure the dual cores should be better. I did some research and for some reason my old xp3200 400fsb barton is actually more expensive then the amd 64x2 dual core 6000+ which is technically more advance. So my question is anybody got any Ideas why? The newer processor should be better yet the pricing on the processor is so different. My current 2 year old processor is 100$ more expensive then the latest dual core.

This is what I want to put together;

Socket AM2 amd athelon 64x 6000+dual core cpu
Asus Crosshair AM2 DLI atx motherboard #17307
4 gig g.skill f2 6400 cl5q-4gbmq
latest nvidia video card. (what ever it is)

Any ideas if this will suite my gaming needs for the next two years? I only ask because when I was younger I was heavy into computers and part specs and last 3 years I have dropped out of keeping track with latest updates and upgrades, and would appreciate any help.
 
What about my processor question?

I am looking to spend no more then 1,000$ on motherboard, processor, videocard, ram. I already have the power supply and the hard drive as well as a very good heat sink/fan.

What about my other question about the processors? What is the difference between;

listed at $167.00 on pricewatch.com - athlon 64 x2 6000

And the old one which I already own;

listed at $268.50 on pricewatch.com - athlon xp 3200

Why is the single core older model more expensive? I want to upgrade to the newer dual core but everywhere I am reading they are saying that dual core is not better for gaming(dominant use for this pc).
 
People will tell you to go with Intel because they currently have an edge over AMD but if you want to stick with AMD you can still build a nice rig (I still went with AMD). The 6000+ is nice but if you want to overclock you should get an FX-62 or 74 and they're supposed to be really nice. If you game a lot you want an 8800gts like this guy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082 Your mobo will be picked based on the processor you end up getting. As for RAM 2x1GB at 800MHz is a good way to go to start... ie http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565 but you could pick any number of RAM and get quality performance.
 
I got yah, my only problems with the fx processors are they are too expensive I would love to invest 2grand into what I like to call a 'godputer' but I am looking for a machine that will last me for two years and won't require heavy heatsincs and water cooling systems. Lets say.. a 'demigodputer'.

My biggest concern with dual core processors is that I am hearing that they conflict with each other. Particularly when doing processes that are not designed for dual cores(gaming). Also, I am hearing that during single processes applications they only work as 1 processor which would mean that any game I am running on the 64x2 6000+ is running only on 1.5ghz as apposed to my current 2.8ghz that I am getting with my athlon xp3200 400fsb barton processor. Also I am hearing that if they do both run they interefere with each other and cause crashes, so I would actually have to go ahead and disable one side. Is there any truth to this?

I understand Dual Core is the future which is one of the biggest reasons why I am looking to invest into the 64x2 6000+ but is the confliction problem real?

I'd prefer an intel processor since they use less power and generate less heat as well than the 6000+ also their overclock better but it's up to you
 
Get a zalman cpu fan to put on top of your 6000+ to keep it nice and cool... thats my next purchase for my 5600+
