cpu and sp2 problem

My neighbour has had all sorts of problems trying to install service pack 2.
He tried installing the version I downloaded only to have it crash his pc.
After a fresh install of windows, his computer downloaded sp2 via windows update and it crashed again.
I told him to take it back to the shop that he got it from and ask them to sort it out. And while he's there to find out why his 3.2Ghz Pentium is only running at 2.8Ghz.
I called in to the shop myself yesterday to find out if they had cured it.
They took out the Prescott and temporarily installed a celeron. They then installed SP2 with no problems at all.
The only way they could get the 3.2Ghz Prescott to run at the right speed was to overclock it, so thats going back to the manufacturer.
Today they are fitting a 3.2Ghz Northwood which they claim is faster anyway.
Who would have thought that a cpu could cause problems with SP2?
