CPU at 100 C and shut down

I just replaced my motherboard because it was broken. I installed the CPU and the heatsink and fan. However I did not apply new thermal paste (I didn't have new thermal paste and figured the one that was on the CPU already was enough).

I turned on the PC, and checked the temperature and my CPU was at 100 celcius and the PC shut down about 20 seconds later.

I removed the CPU, and cooled it down with my Air Conditioner.

I'll get some thermal past tomorrow.

My questions are (1) is it really possible for the CPU to go to 100 celcius without thermal paste (normally it was about 40 celcius), and (2) did I do any damage to my CPU?

I am thinking that perhaps my fan wasn't installed properly and left a large air pocket between the CPU and the heatsink?

it is possible that you damaged your cpu by doing that, but its probably fine... lets wait and see :)

i dont think any real damage was done, when i was switching mb i forgot to connect the fan to the mb and my cpu got to 118*C and im still using it 2 months later.

Same with mine, found out i left the plastic on the bottom of the CPU fan... so there for it didn't work real well!
