CPU beeping

Hey all;

I was wondering if someone could help me. My parents PC at home is a P3, and I have lost all the motherboard manuals etc. The problem is that it beeps - non stop and they are long beeps. It does not matter if I leave the computer on for 30 seconds or 5 minutes. What I'm thinking is that it could be either the motherboard or the CPU chip, but it could also possibly be the RAM.

The chip fan makes really wierd noises and it is pretty dusty. Initially when I had a problem with the RAM in another computer, the beeps were not consistent in timing (they were different intervals of timing) and it would stop after about 10-15 seconds. I might get some RAM out of my own PC and test it in their computer. Otherwise, if this does not work, what would you have to say about this ?

actually there is a speaker (either on the motherboard or it plugs into the motherboard) that beeps whenever there is a problem with the computer. Does it sound like a speaker making a beeping noise or is it more of a clicking noise like something thats moving and its hitting something else.

is there a beep code or anything? or just continuous single beeps in equal intervals?

Yes ... exactly that.

It sounds like it's a speaker - rather than a ticking noise. It's pretty loud.

do you have a microphone or anything hooked up to your computer so you can record it for us to hear. I think I have a book somewhere that tells what certain beeps mean.

No I don't - it's too much of a hassle. If I really want to, I can ... but tonight I think i'll just try a new RAM stick and see how that is - but I would say it's the motherboard or the chip.

ok is it a sequence of long and short beeps a continuous beep... If you know that it should bee enough info.

Yes, but does anyone know what these sequences of beeps are resembling in response to the problem in which the BIOS is trying to indicate ?

What BIOS type is it? Look for Pheonx, AWARD, AMI, etc. You can look up the beep codes on the internet.

however if the computer is not turning on and just bleeps it can indicate a problem with the mouse or keyboard. unusual i know but very true we have these problems often at work as the students (i work in a secondary school as a computer support technician) they like to mess with the mice and keyboards. you should try another mouse.

A sequence of continuous long beeps and a blank screen usually means your RAM is either faulty or not inserted correctly.
