CPU bottleneck question

So I really like the sound of ivy bridge, namely the 3700k. but I want to get a build going before the year ends.

So, If I went with an asus z68 motherboard now, this deluxe one

how badly would this cpu bottleneck the rest of my system, like my 6970. could I still game and do alot of stuff?

doing this just to tide me over till intel releases the 3700k, the 2600k sandy bridge successor.

what do you think?
 
Are you putting the 2600k in until then? Your GPU will bottleneck your CPU. And hopefully with a BIOS update it will support Ivy Bridge, but no one knows for sure.
 
What do you plan to use this computer for since there are few things that benefit from the i7's over the i5's. and also that motherboard is great but there isn't going to be a really big difference from some of the cheaper ones, so you could go down to a 200 dollar one or less and get a i3-2100 which will play any game well, but that cpu will bottlneck it a good bit, i don't think you can get decent settings on any recent game at a good resolution
 
Yes that CPU will bottleneck your GPU, but despite being a Celeron it's actually a quite capable CPU and should make for a decent holdover unless the games you play are particularly CPU intensive.

Anyway, what kinda system do you have now?
 
Right now I have a laoptop, I am planning on doing my first destop build by the end of the month :)

claptonman, no I will not be putting in a 2600k as I do not have one, and you say there is still not 100% confirmation that z68 boards will support upcoming ivy bridge i7's? when will we know?

right now I am looking into this setup.

case: haf x
psu: corsair 1200wat gold
motherboard: Asus z68 deluxe,
cpu: the 3700k ib once it comes out, thinking about using celebron which is purpose of this post.

cooler: noctua d14
gpu: amd 6970, or possible their new 7000 series coming out soon. will be going duel crossfire on three 24in monitors
memory: 16g of g skill 1600mhz
ssd: 120g ocz vertex
hd: 1tb wd 7,200rpm
optical: asus blue ray burner

yup, thats all. problem is that I want to get it going but I dont want to wait for ib, I just hope I can live on this cheapo cpu till ib comes out assuming its compatable with the z68 chipset and the 1155 socket, just wondering what yall thought about it.
 
well that psu, pretty sure i'v posted this somewhere else you posted this, is wayyy overkill, even with all that and 4 6970's you'd have extra watts, so you can save there and grab a 750-850 which will be plenty for 2 of any gpu (other than the 6990 and GTX590). also this is a newer case with the same price, but i like it a little more, and the pics don't show its front fan lights, look it up on google.

I plan on doing heavy over clocking, I would like to get my cpu to 4.5ghz. And from what I read the 2600k oc can reach 300whatts and 4 gpu's at 200whatts each makes over 1000watt. Now I cant tell you where I read this because I have been doing so much research lately on this stuff lol!

As for the case, I looked at that one but airflow doesnt seem to be as good, plus the side window isnt there. what makes it better than the haf x?

Also, I just read on hardforums that the z68's dont over clock very well and that the p67 was a much more respected chipset, whats your take?

for the case, i was just saying i like the looks more, and the airflow is still amazing. for the chipsets, the z68 is fine, someone else tried to say this and linked to a article about it, only to be shot down since the p67 was a 250 dollar board while the z68 was a 100 dollar board. for the psu stuff, i have read an article where they had an overclocked 2600k with 2 580's in sli and straight from the wall socket the max watts pulled was still under 720.
 
so then with a 4 gpu setup you would be past 1000watt then correct? I am thinking about the 6990 and maybe another down the road which is why I am considering the 1200watt psu thats all
 
well the 6990 is technically 2 physical gpus, but for 2 of those then i would say about 900-1000, they recommend a 750 for one, so i'd say a 1000w, maybe 1100w most, when you have more than the used watts you lose efficiency. but also i'd take a gtx 590 over the 6990, it asks for less watts, won't say uses though, they perform about equal in game, trading blows. but the addition of physx on the gtx cards just adds a lot to games, if you don't know what it is then google it, it is much easier to see than to explain.
 
actually they can, but another review i just looked at had the 6990 a good bit better, really there is so much bias in all of these it's hard to find a good legit review.
 
wait so all nvidia cards can run multiple monitors? I thought they didnt have the proper connections on the back?

I may just end up waiting for the next gen, amd is coming out with theirs first. Suppossed to be shortly after if not before christmas, so Ill probably go with their 7000 series
 
2 x GTX580s with a 2600K stock will pull over 760W from the wall, i know, i have them.

If you plan on getting that rig the AX1200W is a good choice. I know because I have it.

I also test wattage from rails, stability, draw in watts and amps from the wall. So I can speak from actual experience.

I too have read that z68 mobos actually suffer from issues for gaming especially when overclocked however I cannot (be bothered) finding the link.

Just be careful, Johnny has no experience other than the internet.
 
actually for the z68 performance part, i seem to remember that the link you based this on was compairing a 200+ buck p67 to a about 100 buck z68, meaning the comparison wasn't really that good of a source. and another article showed their system with a 2600k and 2 580's pulling 720w peak from the wall, and i think your 4 ssd'd and whatever hdd's you have ("4 x 2GB Raid 0"?) could be making up thfor that difference along with some water cooling and a 4.7ghz overclock.
