CPU Choices

Well I am looking to upgrade my computer and first of all it is nothing crazy. I am currently looking at an AMD Athlon 3700+ but I plan on waiting with the big amount of dual core's coming out. I need some info on when the newer AMD Dual's are coming out and I have heard Quad core:confused: ...The only reason I am considering spending extra is because Daul Core will result in no need for replacement for quite awhile.

To summarize when is the new line expected because it will for sure drop prices of both the AMD Athlon 64 and the Dual Core's.

One item that would be helpful in pointing you towards the best model dual core cpu is to know the make and model as well as the type board you are running. It sounds like you have a Socket 939 model that could run the FX60 dual core AMD model or the 4800+ X2 for about 1/2 the price of the FX60 at the present time.

The Socket F LGA type boards are already in production and available to see the eventual replacement of the Socket 940 Opteron model server type boards. The expected newer dual cored models will run on the Socket F boards as well as the quad core models to being marketed in 2007 some time.

The 3700+ is a slight edge over the 3500+ in use here at the moment while still deciding on the FX60 or Opteron 185 when those see a good drop in price. So we are somewhat in the same boat there.

I am running a 3200+ right now(Athlon64) and I have had no problems since I am not that crazy as half the people here about the computer. The dual cores at the moment are way to expensive for my buget and the 3200 has not let me down yet so I was thinking a nice AMD Athlon 84...3800,4000+ or something than I found a great deal on the 3700+ with AMAZING reveiws. I am quite persuaded at the moment to this processor but am waiting for the new line of processors so this price drops.

With the AM3 model boards coming with DDR3 memory and production to stop on all 939 model cpus you are sure to see prices ddddddddrop downnnnn... fast after the beginning of 2007. According to the sticky seen at http://www.computerforum.com/16346-overclocking-101-oc101.html the 3700+ is one of the OC friendly models in the Atholon 64 line.

When having to replace the last build on short notice the 3200+ was found to be slower then the XP3200+ on the last build. The 3500+ gave a slight edge over the old one. It currently runs at 2.22ghz stock where the old 32bit did run at 2.205-2.21ghz before it "bit" the dust. :(

To be completely honest, I doubt you'd notice a very significant difference between a 3200+ and a 3700+ in real world applications.

Between those two you would see a more noticable difference then between the 3500+ and either of one of them. It depends on what you are running. For browsing the web you wouldn't see any difference with a Core 2 maxed out and an old duron 1.2ghz model. That depends on connections and servers for speed there. A dual core model like the FX60 definitely see a large gap between that and the 3700+ even.

Yes my main concern is the socket 939, they will be phased out soon? I wouldnt wanna buy a 939 and wanna upgrade my 3700+ or w.e to a FX to realize they are being phased.

That's life in the computer world! You never can get too comfortable with one thing because something else is already on the wayyyyyyyy...! When you build you have to plan how to get the best use out of it before upgrading to something else. I can easily run the case here for a few years yet. If you are not after the latest "bells, whistles, and excitement" you plan a build with a little room for later expansion and upgrade.

Overall even the 3700+ will still see a difference. When going to debug someone's system with a lower model cpu I've too often seen where I was running the fastest at the time. But you won't be running out for a K5 powered system anytime soon while others still have some of those being used at this time. Where's the panic? ohh myy i don't have that latest.... !!!

you could get an AMD 64 4000+..I got mine for only $100 I easily overclocked it to 2.8ghz on stock cooling with no tempature change..very fast processor I was gonna get a dual core amd x2 4200 but couldn't see paying twice as much..

So your limit is around $120 or so? I would strongly suggest getting the X2 3800+ instead of any single core model, because it is heaven having a dual core. I will never go back to single core.

Alright now! Rub it in just because I'm stuck with the 3500+ instead of the 4800+ X2 or FX60 here. :P But one thing to mention is the price correction needed on the 3800+ X2 found for $159.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103733 oops!
